I don’t really know why there is such a fuss about what currency Scotland would use in the event of independence, our bank notes are play money already. Spent the morning trying to change four of these in Tarifa, got lots of sympathy, but not a single euro. The legal position is that Scottish notes are sterling, but are not actually legal tender, not even Scotland. Absurd, but true. They can be exchanged for goods, services and currency at home or abroad, but each transaction is basically one of trust and individual discretion. I once spent three hours trying to explain this in a bank in the Moroccan rif, in French; I made lots of new friends, but ultimately my powers of persuasion failed. In a way it is quite cute, they might as well be beans. Here’s to the recognition of a new currency The Scottish Bean!
